Support for
Asylum Seekers
The Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF) Inc. welcomes and supports asylum seekers as they rebuild their lives in the Greater Fredericton Area (GFA).
MCAF staff and volunteers work with asylum seekers to:
Assess Needs/Assets and provide Referrals to MCAF, services and programs with government and community including:
- Access to temporary/permanent housing in the GFA
- MCAF food distribution services and local food banks
- Access to donations of clothing, furniture and household items
- register and apply for:
Make a Refugee Claim
- Connect with the New Brunswick Refugee Clinic
- fill out refugee claims
- complete the Basis of Claim Form (BOC) and present refugee protection claims to the Refugee Protection Division (RPD)
- attend hearings with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB)
- meet with legal counsel
- schedule immigration medical exams
Settlement Information & Orientation Sessions
- provide information and orientation on:
- safety and emergency services
- public transportation
- New Brunswick’s education and health care system
- Canadian laws and customs
- Personal finance
- budgeting
- setting up a bank account
- using debit and credit cards
Public Education System
- Register children in an English or French school
- register children in after school activities, homework clubs, etc.
Learn English
MCAF provides English level assessment and placement with:
- Structured English Second Language (ESL) classes, beginner or advanced levels, virtual or in-person, morning, afternoon, or evening
- Volunteer language tutoring
Employment
MCAF employment coaches assist job seekers to successfully apply their skills in the Canadian work force.

- resume & cover letter writing
- job search strategies
- mastering LinkedIn
- interview techniques
- Canadian workplace culture
- Canadian workplace standards and safety
